Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu has made history after being confirmed as the substantive General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
His confirmation, announced on Thursday, October 29, 2026, makes him the first Nigerian to occupy the position in the organisation’s 70-year history.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) congratulated Adamu on his appointment, describing it as an important achievement for Nigerian football administration.
The NFF’s Acting General Secretary, Emmanuel Ikpeme, expressed happiness over the development and confidence in Adamu’s ability to succeed in the new position.
Ikpeme described him as a knowledgeable football administrator who has continued to improve his expertise and understands the business of football administration.
He also assured Adamu of the NFF’s support, wishing him success in his new responsibilities.

Before his confirmation, Adamu served as CAF’s Acting General Secretary following the resignation of his predecessor, Veron Mosengo-Omba, a Swiss-Congolese football administrator, in March 2026.
Adamu joined the continental football governing body as Director of Competitions before moving on to serve as Director of Tournaments and Events.

His experience in organising major African football competitions contributed to his rise within the organisation.
As General Secretary, he will oversee CAF’s daily administrative operations and help implement decisions taken by its Executive Committee.
The appointment represents a significant milestone for Nigeria’s presence in the administration of African football.
