#AFCON2023: Health Advisory: Caution Urged for Individuals with Cardiovascular Concerns During Today’s TV Broadcasts, Say Medical Professionals

Following recent casualties attributed to cardiac arrest during football matches, Nigerians are advised to be mindful of their health ahead of today’s game. The tragic collapse and death of five individuals underscore the potential risks associated with pre-existing cardiovascular conditions, exacerbated by the intense excitement of such events.

Experts warn that combining pre-existing cardiovascular issues with heightened emotional arousal during sports matches significantly increases the risk of adverse cardiovascular events like heart attacks or strokes. The surge in adrenaline and stress hormones during exciting moments can strain the heart, particularly in those with underlying conditions.

As the country anticipates the final match on Sunday, experts advise moderation in emotional involvement, taking breaks during intense moments, and ensuring access to emergency medical assistance. Those with known heart disease are urged to refrain from watching, and individuals with pre-existing conditions should consult healthcare providers.

Michael Balogun, a retired professor of medicine, highlights the importance of understanding potential cardiovascular risks associated with intense emotional experiences during sports events. He emphasizes that cardiovascular health requires proactive measures and encourages a healthy lifestyle.

Remi Omowaiye, a former commissioner, urges Nigerians managing hypertension to avoid watching the final live, emphasizing the emotional stress linked to live football matches. He proposes watching a replay after the match concludes, citing the intense emotions experienced during the semi-final.

Omowaiye calls on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to pay tribute to those who lost their lives during the semi-final, emphasizing the need to honor their memory. Urgency is stressed, especially for individuals with hypertension, given reported deaths during the semi-final, including prominent figures like Cairo Ojougboh, Ayuba Abdullahi, and Osondu Nwoye.

The tragic death of Mikail Osundiji in Ogun State is also mentioned, occurring during a public viewing of the semi-final. Eyewitnesses attribute his demise to shock after the referee cancelled Nigeria’s second goal against South Africa.
