King Mohammed VI has marked 27 years on the throne of Morocco, celebrating the country’s rise as one of Africa’s leading manufacturing, trade and investment hubs. However, the anniversary also highlighted the growing number of Moroccans risking dangerous journeys to Europe in search of better opportunities.
The monarch, widely regarded as Africa’s wealthiest king, received congratulations from world leaders who praised Morocco’s economic progress and expanding influence on the global stage. His reign has seen the country strengthen its industrial base, attract foreign investment and boost its international partnerships.
The celebration came at a time when Morocco is also facing a migration crisis. Thousands of Moroccans recently crossed into Ceuta, Spain’s North African enclave, putting pressure on Spanish authorities and drawing attention to the social and economic challenges still facing many citizens.
Although Morocco’s economy has recorded significant growth, unemployment, inequality and limited opportunities continue to drive many young people to seek a better future abroad. European Union data shows that hundreds of thousands of Moroccan nationals have been found living irregularly across Europe in recent years, either through illegal entry or overstaying their visas.
Morocco has also strengthened its military capabilities by signing major defence agreements with the United States and other international partners, further reinforcing its strategic role in the region.
To mark Throne Day, King Mohammed VI received goodwill messages from several world leaders, including Britain’s King Charles III, Jordan’s King Abdullah II, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.
The messages reflected Morocco’s growing diplomatic influence and the respect the country has earned under Mohammed VI’s leadership.
Despite the country’s economic achievements, the continued migration of thousands of Moroccans serves as a reminder that many citizens are yet to fully benefit from the nation’s progress.
