AFRICA’S WEALTHIEST MONARCHY TIGHTENS SUCCESSION PLANS AS CROWN PRINCE EL HASSAN TAKES ON MILITARY ROLE ONCE HELD BY KING MOHAMMED VI

According to reports from the Moroccan royal court, the 23-year-old prince has been named coordinator of the offices and services of the General Staff of the Royal Armed Forces. The role places him closer to military oversight, intelligence briefings, defence planning, and strategic coordination within Morocco’s armed forces.

The appointment is widely seen as part of a gradual preparation process for future leadership within the Alaouite dynasty, following a traditional pattern where heirs to the throne are gradually introduced to senior state and military duties.

Prince El Hassan has increasingly appeared in public and official engagements in recent years, representing the monarchy at major national and international events. These include presiding over the opening of the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, inaugurating major infrastructure projects such as the Mohammed VI Tower in Rabat, and attending diplomatic and military ceremonies on behalf of the King.

His growing visibility comes as King Mohammed VI has reduced some public engagements due to health-related concerns, while still remaining the reigning monarch.

Observers note that the palace has been carefully shaping the prince’s public image around modernisation, diplomacy, and continuity, positioning him as a central figure in Morocco’s evolving political and economic landscape.
