AFTER YEARS OF BROKEN PROMISES, TINUBU FLAGS OFF CONSTRUCTION OF GOMBE–BIU–MAIDUGURI HIGHWAY

The Federal Government has officially commenced the reconstruction of the Gombe–Biu–Maiduguri highway, a major road project expected to improve transportation and economic activities across the North-East region.

For many residents and road users, the announcement has been met with cautious optimism due to the highway’s long history of abandoned contracts and unfulfilled rehabilitation promises by previous administrations.

The road, which serves as a vital link between Gombe, southern Borno and Maiduguri, has remained in poor condition for years despite several attempts at reconstruction.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony in Gombe, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, described the project as a critical part of President Bola Tinubu’s infrastructure development agenda aimed at improving connectivity and boosting economic growth.

He explained that the 125-kilometre dual carriageway forms part of a larger 420-kilometre transport corridor stretching from Nasarawa State through Plateau and Bauchi states to Borno State.

According to the minister, the project was recently approved by the Federal Executive Council under the fourth phase of the administration’s legacy road programme.

Umahi noted that the government has adopted reinforced concrete pavement technology for the highway to ensure greater durability and reduce maintenance costs over time.

He added that the project is designed not only to improve transportation but also to enhance trade, create economic opportunities and promote development across communities along the route.

The minister expressed confidence in the contractor handling the project and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing longstanding infrastructure challenges nationwide.

Governor Muhammadu Yahaya of Gombe State welcomed the development, describing it as a significant milestone for the North-East.

He noted that the deteriorating condition of the highway has posed serious challenges to residents, businesses and transport operators for many years.

According to the governor, the reconstruction will improve mobility, facilitate commerce, create jobs and strengthen economic activities throughout the region.

He also pledged the support of the state government to ensure the successful execution of the project.

Despite the renewed commitment, many residents remain watchful, hoping the latest effort will succeed where previous projects failed.

If completed as planned, the highway is expected to reduce travel time, lower transportation costs, improve regional connectivity and stimulate economic growth across the North-East.
