AKPABIO URGES GLOBAL SHIFT FROM WAR TO DEVELOPMENT, CALLS FOR STRONGER UN ROLES

Akpabio made the appeal while speaking at the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), where he highlighted rising global instability across regions including the Middle East, Europe, and parts of Africa.

He stated that the world is currently facing what he described as a “crisis of leadership,” stressing that nations must redirect energy and resources away from destruction and toward sustainable development and human advancement.

According to him, legislatures worldwide represent the voice of the people and should serve as key instruments in promoting fairness, stability, and peaceful coexistence among nations.

Akpabio also referenced Nigeria’s experience in managing internal challenges, noting that peace is not automatic but must be deliberately built and sustained through collective effort.

He warned that no region is immune to insecurity or instability and called for stronger commitment to multilateral cooperation and democratic principles as tools for global stability.

The Senate President further urged the IPU to strengthen global governance systems, including support for the United Nations, while ensuring that smaller and vulnerable nations have a stronger voice in international decision-making.

He emphasized that the human cost of conflict extends beyond statistics, leaving lasting social and economic damage on families and communities.
