The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu alleges that many cash clearances within the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) during Godwin Emefiele’s tenure lacked the signature of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
President Tinubu’s spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, highlighted the absence of Buhari’s authorization for substantial expenditures from foreign reserves, amounting to billions of dollars. Despite strides in other areas, such as infrastructure and business accessibility, the disregard for CBN mismanagement under Buhari is cited as a factor in the current state of the economy.
Emefiele, facing multiple lawsuits, oversaw the CBN throughout Buhari’s tenure, with allegations of forged documents emerging in recent trials. Witnesses, including the immediate-past Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, have testified against Emefiele, claiming ignorance of the transactions and noting discrepancies in Buhari’s signature. The case raises questions about accountability and governance within Nigeria’s financial institutions.
