APC FACES POST-PRIMARY TURBULENCE AS AGGRIEVED ASPIRANTS WEIGH DEFECTION, LEGAL ACTION

As the curtain falls on the APC primary elections across the country, the ruling party now faces what political observers describe as the second and potentially more dangerous phase of the process: managing the fallout from aggrieved aspirants who believe they were unfairly denied the opportunity to contest through transparent democratic primaries.

Investigations by Headlinenews.news indicate that growing discontent is emerging in several states where the consensus arrangement adopted by party leaders has been challenged by aspirants and their supporters who insist that due process was not followed.

Party sources disclosed that governors, members of the APC National Working Committee and other stakeholders have intensified reconciliation efforts amid fears that defections by influential political mobilisers could weaken the party’s electoral machinery ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The concern is not without basis.

Politics remains fundamentally a game of numbers, structures and mobilisation. While political parties may control institutions and enjoy incumbency advantages, elections are ultimately won by candidates capable of attracting loyal supporters to the polls. Consequently, the loss of politically active grassroots leaders could create avoidable vulnerabilities in highly competitive constituencies.

Several aspirants who spoke to Headlinenews.news on condition of anonymity alleged that substantial financial resources were committed to preparations for direct primaries and given to electoral officers that never eventually held in their constituencies.

According to these sources, campaign structures were activated, supporters mobilised and logistical arrangements completed in anticipation of electoral committees arriving to conduct primaries, but they never showed up and no apologies.

However, some claimed that electoral officials never appeared at designated venues despite collecting mobilisation and thousands of party members waiting for several hours to participate in the exercise as they were locked up in the government house illegally.

Headlinenews.news gathered that in certain states, some aggrieved aspirants are considering legal action and formal petitions against what they describe as procedural irregularities and denial of democratic participation.

One source alleged that an aspirant who reportedly expended over ₦550 million in preparation for a primary election including funding the electoral committee with evidence for an election that never took place has instructed his legal team to explore available remedies.

The situation has reportedly attracted the attention of opposition parties seeking to capitalise on the growing dissatisfaction within APC ranks.

Multiple sources confirmed that several prominent APC aspirants have recently received invitations and political overtures from rival parties ahead of the 2027 elections.

Among the most closely watched cases is that of Kano Central Senatorial aspirant, Dr. Mohammed Musa Zango, whose supporters maintain that he commands one of the largest grassroots political structures currently operating within the constituency. Kano State is very important to the President for 2027.

According to party stakeholders familiar with developments in Kano, Dr. Zango has become the subject of intense political interest following the controversy surrounding the APC senatorial primary.

Sources claim that opposition figures have approached him with offers to contest under alternative political platforms including an automatic Senatorial ticket after observing the scale of support demonstrated by his followers across the constituency.

Headlinenews.news understands that Dr. Zango is currently in Abuja awaiting the outcome of petitions submitted to the APC Appeal Committee before making any decision regarding his political future.

Confirming the development, Prof. Ameeda Fraser, Director of Strategy of the Zango Organisation, stated that enormous resources had been committed to the senatorial aspiration and expressed disappointment over the circumstances surrounding the disputed primary process.

According to her, the project involved extensive financial commitments, months of grassroots mobilisation, thousands of volunteer hours, and the deployment of political structures across Kano Central’s 15 local government areas and 172 wards.

Prof. Fraser argued that aspirants who entered the race in good faith deserved transparency from the outset if party leaders had already settled on preferred candidates.

“If there was already a preferred candidate, aspirants should have been informed from the beginning rather than encouraged to commit substantial financial, human and organisational resources to a process whose outcome had effectively been predetermined,” she said.

“The campaign involved billions of naira in direct and indirect investments, countless hours of volunteer effort, and the dedication of supporters who believed they would have had an opportunity to participate in a transparent democratic process. The disappointment among many grassroots supporters stems not merely from the outcome, but from the perception that they were denied the opportunity to express their choice through a credible primary election.”

She maintained that the Zango Organisation remains one of the fastest-growing political movements in Kano Central, now widely known as the “Fatahiyya Movement”, with active structures across all 172 wards and the 15 local government areas that make up the senatorial district, spreading to other constituencies.

According to her, the movement continues to expand daily, attracting supporters from diverse political, professional and community backgrounds who identify with its message of grassroots empowerment, political inclusion and democratic participation.

Political analysts warn that the APC’s ability to manage post-primary grievances may ultimately prove as important as the primaries themselves.

Historically, Nigerian elections have often been influenced not only by opposition strength but by divisions within ruling parties. Several governorship, senatorial and presidential contests have been shaped by defections, protest votes and internal party rebellions arising from disputed nomination processes.

A senior APC stakeholder who requested anonymity expressed confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would support efforts aimed at resolving legitimate grievances and preserving party unity.

The source described the President as a committed democrat who would be concerned by any development capable of undermining internal party democracy or weakening the APC’s electoral prospects.

“The challenge now is reconciliation,” the source said. “The party must ensure that every stakeholder feels respected, heard and fairly treated. Unity will be critical going into 2027.”

For the APC, the immediate battle may no longer be about who won the primaries, but about retaining the loyalty, structures and political capital of those who believe they lost not at the ballot box, but through the process itself.
It is important for the APC to act fast and save their loyal aggrieved members with political capital.
