HEADLINENEWS.NEWS correspondent gathered that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has won all the 33 chairmanship seats in last Saturday’s local council elections in Oyo State.
The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) conducted the local government election with the closest contender being the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the main opposition kicked against what it described as shambolic outing of the State Independent Electoral Commission..
Isiaka Olagunju, OYSIEC Chairman, stated that the victory of PDP after results were presented and announced by the Returning Officers.
Olagunju, who commended conduct of the poll, however described it as free, fair, credible and violence-free.
He appreciated the efforts of the electoral officers as well as other stakeholders and security agencies who worked in harmony for the success of the elections.
The OYSIEC Chairman, who stated that there are areas of improvement to be worked on, said the detailed report of the election would be presented to the state government.
But Oyo APC said the Council election was a sham capable of causing the state untold disrepute if allowed to stand.
In a statement issued Saturday and made available to journalists in Ibadan by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the broom party said “and for this not to happen, the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has to halt the exercise and reschedule it for another day when it is ready to conduct a free, fair and credible poll.
Alleged reports from across the State indicate that cases of non-availability of election officials, disenfranchisement of eligible voters, shortage of voting materials, violence and threat to life were recorded while the electoral commission appear d helpless to rescue the situation even as voters waited endlessly in most the places affected.
The statement said “another opportunity to deepen democracy and return power to the people at the grassroots has had to be missed due to the insensitivity and insincerity on the part of the ruling class in the state.
Meanwhile, Oyo state government wh congratulated the winners said that the victory of all PDP candidates in the LG elections was predictable.
In a statement issued by the State Commissioner for Information, Dotun Oyelade, after the announcement of the results, the outstanding performance of Governor Seyi Makinde in the last five years was the major reason why the election turned out to be one-sided.
The Commissioner also attributed the election result to the quality of the candidates which the ruling party presented.
“This is a glowing tribute to the governor and his government as this is the last election under his watch till 2027 when he and the just elected LG chairmen and councillors will end their tenures.”
The Information Commissioner observed that surprisingly the opposition party started rehearsing their complaints barely 30 minutes to the commencement of the elections yesterday morning.
He charged them to behave like sportsmen and stop mixing fantasy with democracy.
The Commissioner saluted the commitments of the security team, the OYSIEC chairman and his team for daring to make a difference after the challenges of the past two Local Govt elections
