A controversial lawmaker representing Bauchi South, Senator Shehu Umar Buba, has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Bauchi State, a move that has sparked widespread criticism amid unresolved allegations linked to insecurity in Northern Nigeria.
The senator entered the governorship race on Saturday, a development that has drawn public attention due to ongoing accusations against him, which critics say have not been publicly addressed.
Concerns around his candidacy are largely tied to past allegations connecting him to banditry-related activities and other security controversies across parts of the North.
Reports had earlier detailed claims involving alleged links to negotiations with a wanted terror figure, accusations of contributing to religious tensions in Plateau State, and allegations suggesting involvement in facilitating travel arrangements for suspected criminals.
The senator has also faced criticism over claims of deepening sectarian divisions in Jos, which further intensified scrutiny of his political and security profile.
In September 2025, a northern youth coalition, the Arewa Youth Movement, called for a formal investigation into the senator, urging security agencies to examine alleged ties between him and armed groups responsible for attacks in several states.
The group had also alleged connections to the distribution of motorcycles allegedly used by bandits in Zamfara State, as well as claims of assistance provided to injured fighters, accusations which the senator has not publicly addressed in detail.
