Buckingham Palace has issued a measured response after comments made by former U.S. President Donald Trump during a state dinner at the White House sparked diplomatic attention.
During his speech, Trump appeared to suggest that King Charles III supported his stance on preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, claiming the monarch “agrees with me even more than I do.” He also used the moment to reinforce his broader foreign policy views, referencing global threats and military strength while addressing guests at the East Room event.
The remarks quickly drew attention given the sensitivity of linking a reigning British monarch to active geopolitical conflicts. In response, Buckingham Palace clarified the King’s position, stating that Charles is “naturally mindful of his Government’s long-standing and well-known position on the prevention of nuclear proliferation.”

The statement effectively re-emphasised the constitutional role of the monarch, who is expected to remain politically neutral and act on the advice of the UK government in matters of foreign policy.
The comments came amid ongoing tensions surrounding the Middle East, where the U.S. has been involved in military and diplomatic manoeuvres following recent strikes on Iranian-linked targets and subsequent regional escalation.
Despite the political undertones, Trump maintained a warm tone toward the King during the dinner, praising his earlier speech to Congress and describing himself as “jealous” of the reception it received. King Charles, in his own remarks, reflected on the long and sometimes complicated history between the UK and the United States, while also lightly joking about historical rivalries between Britain, France and America.
The exchange highlighted both the enduring symbolism of the “special relationship” and the careful diplomatic balance maintained by the monarchy when navigating modern geopolitical discussions.
