As political parties begin positioning themselves for the 2027 general election, the emergence of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has prompted rivals to reassess their campaign strategies. A major talking point is the alliance between Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, who are contesting on a joint platform popularly known as the “OK Movement.”
Kwankwaso’s selection as the vice-presidential candidate is widely seen as a strategic effort to bridge Nigeria’s longstanding political and regional divisions. With years of experience in governance and grassroots mobilisation, he is regarded as a seasoned politician capable of strengthening the party’s reach.
The former Kano State governor has built a reputation for developing a disciplined political structure over the years. Having served under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Congress (APC), and later leading the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Kwankwaso has remained a dominant force in Kano and across parts of the Northwest. His influence was evident during the 2023 elections when the NNPP secured victory in Kano, largely driven by the well-established Kwankwasiyya movement.
His record in public office is also viewed as a major asset. During his two terms as governor, he invested heavily in education, sponsoring numerous students for overseas scholarships. Supporters believe this complements Peter Obi’s emphasis on economic reforms and prudent financial management, presenting the NDC as a party focused on governance and human capital development.
Kwankwaso also brings national security experience from his time as Minister of Defence, a credential many analysts consider valuable as Nigeria continues to battle insecurity. Political observers argue that combining Obi’s popularity in the Southeast with Kwankwaso’s influence in the Northwest gives the party a stronger national outlook built around inclusion and development.
Despite these strengths, the alliance has attracted criticism. Opponents have revisited Kwankwaso’s previous comments rejecting a partnership with Obi ahead of the 2023 election, raising questions about the consistency of his political position. Some critics also describe him as a frequent party defector and argue that the new alliance must convince Nigerians it is motivated by national interest rather than political ambition.
Questions have also been raised about the extent of his influence beyond Kano. Although he commands significant support in his home state, analysts note that his performance across other northern states in the last presidential election was less impressive. His progressive political style has also generated mixed reactions among some conservative northern groups.
In recent months, Kwankwaso revealed that his daughter encouraged him to work with Obi, believing the partnership reflected the aspirations of many young Northerners. Political commentators see this as evidence of a growing desire among younger voters to move beyond historical divisions and support leadership based on competence and good governance.
Supporters of the alliance believe bringing together the Obidient movement and the Kwankwasiyya political base could create a formidable national coalition capable of challenging the country’s traditional political structures. They argue that the Southeast-Northwest partnership demonstrates that regional cooperation is possible and offers Nigerians an alternative to the established political order.
Ultimately, Kwankwaso’s impact on the NDC ticket will depend on his ability to expand his influence beyond Kano and rally broader support across the North. While his organisational strength and grassroots appeal remain key advantages, he must also address concerns stemming from his past political positions and convince voters that the alliance represents a genuine opportunity for national unity and progress ahead of the 2027 elections.
