#Ceremonial Turbaning in Epe: An Interview with Hon Tobun Abiodun, Head of Fundraising Committee

In a historic event at the Epe Itaopo Central Mosque, Sheikh Abdulkabir Oriyomi Shamradeen has been appointed as the new Chief Imam, marking a significant chapter in the mosque’s history.

Honorable Tobun Abiodun, the Chairman of the Committee on Commerce, Trade, Investment, and Industry, and also the Chairman of the Planning Committee for today’s program, shed light on the importance of this appointment.

Could you elaborate on the significance of Sheikh Abdulkabir Oriyomi Shamradeen’s appointment as the new Chief Imam for the Epe Itaopo Central Mosque?

Certainly, today marks the appointment of the ninth Chief Imam for the Epe Itaopo Central Mosque, a ceremony applauded and well-supported by the entire community. It’s a developmental initiative, ensuring there is no vacuum in such a crucial role.

Indeed. The new Chief Imam will be turbaned today by the grand Chief Imams of the states, who are all expected to grace this occasion.

Thank you very much, sir. Much appreciated.”

As the Chairman of the Fundraising Committee, what motivated the decision for fundraising, what is the goal, and how much is the committee expected to raise?

“The central mosque, established since 1978, has witnessed considerable infrastructural developments over the years. However, in keeping with global standards, there’s a need for renovations – be it glazing, tiles, or structural enhancements. Just like any home requires periodic renovation, and considering the years since 1978, we believe it’s time to refurbish, paint, upgrade the infrastructure, and make it conducive for those who gather for prayers and Jumat.

Certainly. The aim is to bring the mosque in line with global standards and ensure it provides a comfortable and modern environment.

Given recent religious tensions, how do you envision Sheikh Abdulkabir Oriyomi Shamradeen’s appointment contributing to unity and stability within the mosque and the community?

The Chief Imam is poised to foster peaceful coexistence among inhabitants, irrespective of their backgrounds, whether indigenous or non-indigenous, residents of different tribes. He is a solid Islamic scholar, well-versed and experienced, with the divine guidance. His sermons are expected to promote harmony within the community, emphasizing the virtues of Prophet Muhammad and the importance of collaborative efforts for peace and harmonious living.

What message would you like to convey to the residents of Epe regarding the turbaning ceremony and the importance of community involvement?

“My message is for everyone to embrace the spirit of peaceful coexistence. With the appointment of another Chief Imam, let’s work together as a united community. Cooperation and collaboration with him are crucial. Support him in all aspects and encourage him to contribute more to the community.

Recognize that imperfection is inherent in human nature, and although we are not implying he will make mistakes, it’s essential to be ready to cooperate, accept him as he is, and forgive if necessary.

God will guide and support him on the right path.”

How do you foresee the role of the new Chief Imam in fostering unity and collaboration between the Islamic and traditional chiefs of Epe land?

“He should consider his appointment as a divine intervention by Almighty Allah. Encouraging young scholars and promoting Islamic education within the community should be a priority. While individuals pursue higher academic studies, they should also focus on developing themselves Islamically. Epe is renowned for its rich Islamic culture, and he must be seen actively fostering that within the mosque.”

The turbaning ceremony not only signifies a spiritual milestone but also serves as a catalyst for positive change and collaboration within the Epe community.
