Arsenal F.C. battled to a hard-fought draw against Atlético Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final, with both sides cancelling each other out in a tense encounter in Madrid.
The visitors took the lead just before halftime when Viktor Gyökeres converted from the penalty spot after being fouled in the box. It was a composed finish that gave Arsenal a narrow advantage heading into the break.
However, Atletico responded early in the second half. A handball by Ben White handed the hosts a penalty of their own, which Julián Álvarez calmly dispatched to level the score.
The match was not without controversy. Arsenal were left frustrated after a late penalty appeal involving David Hancko and Eberechi Eze was overturned following a VAR review, with the referee ruling the contact insufficient.

While the game lacked the goal frenzy seen in the other semi-final between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, it made up for it with intensity and tactical discipline, as neither side was willing to give away an edge.
Atletico started brightly, with David Raya called into action early to deny Álvarez. Arsenal, on the other hand, played more cautiously, looking to hit on the counter, with Martin Ødegaard and Noni Madueke both coming close.
After the break, Atletico turned up the pressure. Antoine Griezmann struck the crossbar and wasted a rebound, while Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman had two good chances but couldn’t find the net.
Despite long spells of Atletico dominance, Arsenal’s defensive resilience ensured they left Spain with the tie finely balanced.
The Gunners will now turn their attention to a Premier League clash with Fulham F.C., as they continue their title race with Manchester City F.C., before hosting Atletico in the decisive second leg in London.
