The court also advised Ofoegbu to seek bail at the High Court in Awka, explaining that the magistrate’s court does not have the authority to grant bail in the matter. The case was adjourned until July 27 for a report on compliance.

During the proceedings, the complainant was represented by A.A. Nwanri alongside the Governor’s Chief Security Officer, O.K. Nkuma.

Prosecuting counsel Tochukwu Echemagu, attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka, told the court that the defendant is facing charges of identity theft, cyberstalking and criminal defamation.

According to the prosecution, Ofoegbu allegedly created and circulated false and defamatory reports about Governor Soludo and his family in an effort to increase online traffic and earn financial benefits.

The police alleged that the publications falsely claimed the governor had disowned his son, Ozonna, and included fabricated statements portraying the governor in a negative light, as well as claims involving an alleged drinking contest with a minister.

The prosecution added that although the defendant had previously issued a public apology and retracted the reports, he remains on trial for the alleged offences.

Police said the charges were filed under relevant provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, and the Nigerian Criminal Code Act.
