#Defying Destiny: Troost Ekong’s Journey through Forbidden Passion

This is not the typical rags-to-riches tale of most footballers; born in Harlem, Netherlands, to a Nigerian father from Akwa Ibom and a Dutch mother.

As a child, he harbored a forbidden love for football, causing serious friction in his family. Despite his father’s desire for him to pursue education, at the age of 12, he was sent to a boarding school in England.

Instead of focusing on studies, he deepened his passion for football.

Returning after three years, he faced resistance from his father when seeking approval to join a football academy. His mother’s support led to a further strain in his parents’ marriage, resulting in a divorce.

Joining Tottenham Football Academy in London didn’t make his journey a fairy tale.

After three years, a coach claimed he wasn’t good enough, but he persisted, eventually joining Groningen and later Gent.

Switching his national allegiance to Nigeria marked a turning point. Despite challenges, he moved to Bursaspor in Turkey, then Udinese in Italy, fulfilling his dream.

Reconciling with his father post-World Cup, he secured a move to Watford, helping them gain promotion.

A successful international career followed, forming a formidable partnership with Leon Balogun, dubbed “The Oyibo Wall.”

In 2023, an injury-hit season at Salernitana led to exclusion from the national team.

Despite setbacks, he persevered, making a comeback and excelling in the AFCON, leading Nigeria to the finals with three crucial penalties.

The narrative underscores resilience, emphasizing that worthwhile pursuits demand enduring hardships.

The eventual triumph is always worth the struggle. “No gree for anybody ooooh.”
