DICKSON, AGBEDI SET FOR SHOWDOWN IN BAYELSA WEST SENATORIAL RACE

With only legislative elections scheduled in Bayelsa State in 2027, the spotlight has turned to the Bayelsa West Senatorial District, where a political contest is already generating tension. The absence of a governorship race has heightened focus on the Senate seat, setting the stage for a potential showdown.

At the center of the dispute is a long-standing, unwritten “gentleman’s agreement” between the Sagbama and Ekeremor clans, which has historically guided the rotation of key political offices. This arrangement is now under strain as political actors from both clans vie for the next senatorial position, raising concerns over zoning balance.

Incumbent Senator Seriake Dickson’s potential third-term bid and the declared ambition of Fred Agbedi have intensified the debate. Agbedi, a four-term House of Representatives member representing Sagbama/Ekeremor, announced he will contest the Senate in 2027, stepping down from the House to focus on the senatorial race. Widely recognized for his grassroots engagement, youth and women empowerment programs, and long political career, Agbedi hails from Ekeremor, a district with a larger population that could influence voting patterns.

Many stakeholders have voiced concern that the zoning arrangement now favors Sagbama, particularly since Dickson moved to the Senate in 2020 after completing his tenure as governor. Advocacy groups, including the South South Reawakening Group, have criticized Dickson’s moves, arguing that a third term would violate the established rotation and destabilize local politics.

Adding complexity is the emergence of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), seen by critics as a potential vehicle for Dickson’s ambitions. The party has dismissed such claims, stating no individual has declared re-election intentions and that zoning is not legally binding.

Senator Dickson, despite not publicly confirming a bid, remains a central figure, leveraging his influence in Sagbama and engaging political actors statewide. Analysts note that his popularity may face challenges due to past controversies and voter fatigue.

Observers also suggest that the All Progressives Congress (APC) could influence the outcome if it fields a candidate from Ekeremor, potentially splitting the vote and affecting results.

As 2027 approaches, the Bayelsa West senatorial contest is expected to be shaped by zoning tensions, party rivalries, and shifting alliances, with key actors determining whether tradition or individual ambition will dominate the district’s political landscape.
