A tense exchange reportedly erupted during a closed Senate session on Tuesday after Senator Kawu Sumaila of Kano South challenged the Senate leadership over the management of federal loans, stalled infrastructure projects, and political arrangements within the upper legislative chamber.

The disagreement began when Sumaila raised concerns about the condition of several government projects across the country. He questioned why numerous contractors had abandoned project sites, citing delays in payment despite the approval of substantial borrowing requests by the National Assembly.
According to sources familiar with the meeting, the senator warned that the inability to complete and fund key projects could negatively affect the political fortunes of lawmakers and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sumaila reportedly argued that many legislators would struggle to defend the government’s performance before voters if ongoing projects remained incomplete and economic challenges persisted.
His comments were said to have triggered strong reactions from Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele. During the heated discussion, both leaders allegedly referenced benefits and political arrangements linked to Sumaila’s move to the APC.

Sources claimed that the Senate leadership mentioned a major ecological project contract in Kano and the senator’s appointment to head the Senate Committee on Petroleum Downstream following the passing of former Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.
However, Sumaila reportedly rejected any attempt to use those developments against him, insisting that his comments reflected the concerns shared by many lawmakers. He maintained that he would not be intimidated for speaking on issues affecting project implementation and governance.

The exchange highlighted growing concerns within the Senate over project funding, public spending, and the political implications of ongoing economic challenges as preparations for the 2027 elections gradually gather momentum.
