The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has recognised the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Adeola Ajayi, for his efforts in improving cooperation between security agencies and the media in Nigeria.
The award was presented during a two-day National Security Summit organised by the NUJ in collaboration with the DSS in Abuja.
Speaking at a press briefing in the capital, NUJ National President Al-Hassan Yahaya said the honour reflects the importance of strong relations between the media and security institutions in safeguarding lives, strengthening democracy and supporting national development.
He noted that under Ajayi’s leadership, the DSS has maintained consistent engagement with journalists and media organisations, helping to build trust, reduce misinformation and encourage better coordination in addressing security challenges.
According to the union, the recognition highlights the DSS leadership’s commitment to openness, dialogue and partnership with stakeholders in the media space.
The NUJ stressed that national security is a shared responsibility that depends on professional journalism, accurate reporting and effective communication among all relevant actors.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, who chaired the summit, commended both the media and security agencies for their roles in maintaining national stability.
He called for continued professionalism, stronger inter-agency cooperation and greater use of intelligence-driven and technology-based approaches to tackling security issues in the country.
Participants at the summit also reaffirmed the importance of responsible media reporting in supporting national security efforts and fostering public understanding.
The event concluded with commendations for the DSS leadership for creating an environment that encourages dialogue and collaboration on security matters.
