The National Patriots challenges the misleading tax claims reportedly made by Eedris Abdulkareem in his song Beg Your Papa.
Nigerians deserve the truth.
The claim that a worker earning ₦70,000 monthly will lose ₦17,500 to income tax, leaving ₦52,500, contradicts the Nigeria Tax Act 2025. Qualifying minimum-wage employment income is exempt from personal income tax.
Similarly, the law does not impose an automatic 25% income-tax deduction on an ₦80,000 trading investment or on every petty trader’s earnings.
The highest 25% personal income-tax rate applies only to the portion of annual chargeable income exceeding ₦50 million.
Furthermore, the Nigeria Tax Act commenced on 1 January 2026. It is not legislation awaiting commencement after the 2027 election.
We challenge Abdulkareem to identify the provisions of the law supporting his reported allegations and correct any inaccurate statements.
The National Patriots has petitioned the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and requested the support of the Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) in addressing these misleading tax claims. We are particularly concerned that such claims may confuse voters with limited literacy or access to reliable information, leaving them vulnerable to unnecessary fear about taxation and their livelihoods.
Political criticism is legitimate. Misrepresenting legislation is not responsible public communication.
We call on the NBC to examine the complete recording, including its Hausa-language passages, and determine whether any licensed broadcaster has violated applicable regulations.
Should credible evidence of unlawful ethnic incitement emerge, the appropriate authorities should investigate it in accordance with the law.
Nigeria’s unity must never become collateral damage in political disagreements. Facts must prevail over fear.
