#EFCC and NSCDC Collaborate to Combat Illegal Mining in Enugu

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have agreed to collaborate in the fight against illegal mining, oil bunkering, and tax evasion in Enugu State. This partnership was established on Thursday, March 28, 2024, during a courtesy visit by the Enugu State Commandant of the NSCDC, Commandant Otoibhi Ehi Cyprian, to Assistant Commander Aliyu Nuhu Naibi, the EFCC’s Enugu Zonal Commander. Naibi emphasized the importance of a strong alliance between the EFCC and NSCDC to address these economic crimes, which he likened to acts of economic sabotage.

“Illegal mining, oil bunkering, and tax evasion are critical forms of economic sabotage that the EFCC is actively combating,” remarked Naibi. He highlighted the need for collaborative intelligence gathering and strategic planning to effectively tackle these issues for the benefit of the state’s residents. Naibi also pointed out that many illegal miners are involved in money laundering and tax evasion schemes. “We urge you to report cases such as tax evasion. Whether a mining company is operating legally or illegally, it is essential for us to ensure they are meeting their tax obligations. There is also a concern about money laundering through mining activities, and we need your assistance in identifying and addressing such activities,” he added.

Naibi encouraged the NSCDC to enhance information sharing with the EFCC. “If you come across any information during your operations that relates to our areas of interest, such as illegal activities contributing to economic crimes, please inform us promptly so that we can take immediate action,” he emphasized. In his remarks, Cyprian expressed his intention to establish a strong partnership with the EFCC to enhance the NSCDC’s effectiveness in Enugu State. “I am here to seek collaboration and effective cooperation. Our goal is to work together closely to fulfill our mandates and strengthen our existing relationship,” he stated.
