The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has voiced his concern about the increasing involvement of Nigerian youths in cybercrimes. In a statement released by the EFCC, Olukoyede stated that it is troubling that seven out of ten students in Nigeria are currently engaged in cybercrimes. During a courtesy visit from a delegation of Daar Communication PLC, Olukoyede urged the media, particularly Daar Communications, to play a role in enlightening the youth about the negative consequences of cybercrimes. He emphasized the importance of preparing today’s youth, who are future leaders, and called for extensive media campaigns across the country to educate them on the harmful effects of internet-related crimes.

In a separate development, an Ilorin Magistrate’s Court in Kwara State ordered the remand of an Ibadan-based social media influencer and herbalist, Sultan Ojuwoni Atakoro, along with Olaitan Ibrahim Olalekan. The duo was remanded at the Correctional Service center Oke-Kura, Ilorin, after being arraigned by the Kwara State Police Command for alleged rape and arson. The charges against them included criminal conspiracy, unlawful trial by ordeal, rape, causing grievous bodily hurt by dangerous means, and an attempt to commit culpable homicide. The court, acknowledging the severity of the charges, ordered their remand until January 17, 2024, stating that the offenses were not ordinarily bailable.
