EID-EL-KABIR: LAGOS BANS SALE OF RAMS ON HIGHWAYS, MOVES TO EASE TRAFFIC CHAOS

Lagos Warns Against Sale of Rams on Highways Ahead of Eid-el-Kabir

The Lagos State Government has issued a fresh warning to residents and traders against the sale or display of rams and other livestock on highways, road medians and other unauthorised public spaces ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, gave the warning on Monday during a briefing in Lagos, stressing that the state would strictly enforce environmental laws throughout the festive period.

He said the government would not tolerate street trading or any activity that blocks traffic, endangers lives, or defaces the environment during the Sallah celebrations.

According to him, the restriction covers the sale of rams and other livestock on major roads, medians, lay-bys, parks, gardens and other public spaces across the state.

Wahab explained that although livestock trading usually increases during festive periods, traders must operate strictly in approved locations and comply with environmental regulations.

He warned that enforcement teams would be fully deployed to clamp down on illegal street trading, unauthorised stalls, and the conversion of open spaces into illegal markets or refuse dumps.

“Let me restate the government’s resolve to firmly apply regulatory and enforcement measures against contraventions of environmental laws and regulations,” he said, urging residents to comply with existing rules.

The commissioner also advised residents to maintain proper hygiene during the celebrations, especially in the handling and disposal of waste from animal slaughter.

He encouraged Lagosians to bag their waste properly and dispose of it at designated collection points for evacuation by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).

Wahab assured that the government remains committed to promoting a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable environment across the state.

He further cautioned against indiscriminate dumping of refuse and other environmental violations, warning that offenders would face penalties under the law.

The commissioner also congratulated Muslim faithful ahead of Eid-el-Kabir and urged residents to make use of parks, gardens and recreational centres across the state for relaxation during the festive period.
