Panic broke out on Sunday after a fire erupted at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, sending travellers and airport workers scrambling for safety.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) confirmed the incident, saying emergency responders were immediately deployed to contain the fire.
In a statement released on Sunday, FAAN said its Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFFS) was on the ground battling the blaze.
“The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) wishes to inform the public that a fire incident has occurred at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos,” the statement read.
The agency added that firefighters were working to bring the situation under control as quickly as possible.
Despite the incident, FAAN said no casualties or fatalities had been recorded.
“There have been no reported casualties or loss of life. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available,” the authority stated.
The fire is the second major incident at the airport this year. In February, a separate fire at Terminal 1 destroyed key air-to-ground communication equipment belonging to the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), forcing air traffic controllers to rely on backup systems to keep flight operations running.
At the time, NAMA Managing Director Farouk Umar described the damage as a major setback, saying the fire had completely affected the agency’s communication system with aircraft.
