#Enhanced Safety Measures: NIWA to Introduce Bi-Weekly Patrols on Lagos Waters.

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has unveiled plans to conduct bi-weekly routine patrols on Lagos State waters to enhance monitoring of boat operators’ activities. This initiative aims to bolster safety measures, reduce boat mishaps, and enforce regulations on erring operators within the inland waterways.

Addressing stakeholders at a one-day training program in Lagos, NIWA’s Managing Director, Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, outlined the establishment of four zones for effective monitoring across the Lagos waterways. These zones, designated as A, B, C, and D, will be policed by personnel from various agencies, including the Marine Police, Joint Task Force, and NIWA officials.

Engr. Sarat Braimah, representing the Managing Director, emphasized the importance of collaboration between operators and regulatory authorities to address recurring issues such as frequent boat mishaps. She urged operators to provide operational insights to aid in proactive measures against accidents.

During the training session, boat operators were encouraged to voice safety concerns openly, without fear of repercussion, fostering a transparent dialogue aimed at improving safety standards. Additionally, a lecture on safety and rescue interventions underscored the importance of preparedness and proficiency in swimming, particularly during emergencies.

Despite the comprehensive efforts, challenges such as high licensing fees and inadequate training resources were raised by boat drivers. In response, NIWA pledged to review licensing costs and encouraged operators to prioritize safety training, emphasizing its critical role in averting disasters.

Overall, the collaborative efforts between NIWA and boat operators signify a proactive approach towards enhancing safety on Lagos waters, reflecting a shared commitment to mitigating risks and ensuring the well-being of all stakeholders involved in inland waterway operations.Breaking news HeadlineHeadline news
