The announcement of South Africa’s Tyla as the winner of the Best African Music Performance category at the recent 66th Grammy Awards left many Nigerians disheartened.
Fans of the Nigerian nominees, including Davido, Burna Boy, Asake, and Ayra Starr, were hopeful for victories in their respective categories, but none materialized.
Tyla secured the victory with her hit song “Water,” overshadowing the Nigerian artists.
The South African artist gained international recognition in 2023 with the release of the single, which achieved top-ten rankings in sixteen countries, including the United Kingdom and the United States.
Remarkably, “Water” marked the first instance in 55 years that a song by a South African soloist entered the US Billboard Hot 100.
This Grammy win makes Tyla the eleventh South African to receive this prestigious music award.
