#FAAN keeps mum seven months after thieves carted away Lagos airport cables

Months after the major components of the Instrument Landing System (ILS) were stolen from runway 18/36 at the international wing of Murtala Muhammad Airport (MMA) in Lagos, the perpetrators remain unidentified.

Information obtained by the Nigerian Tribune suggests that despite the conclusion of investigations by the committee established by the Ministry of Aviation’s permanent secretary, Dr. Emmanuel Meribole, the findings and the identities of the cable thieves have not been disclosed to the public.

The committee, tasked with probing the theft, submitted its findings to the former Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mr. Kabir Mohammed, but no action has been taken.

The theft of the runway cable lights occurred on July 10, 2023, leading to the suspension of seven individuals, primarily Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel on duty that day. Those responsible for the act reportedly had support from some agency staff who took advantage of the airport’s runway closure for over three months.

While FAAN had replaced nearly 90 percent of the stolen facilities, no updates regarding the investigations have been provided.

A source mentioned, “We are almost through with the replacement of the runway lights. As it is, we are about 98 percent done. The report of the investigative panel was ready and submitted to the former management of FAAN. I think the management acted on it, but the report was not just made public.”

Another stakeholder emphasized the need for stricter security measures at sensitive areas to prevent a recurrence. The individual expressed concern about the safety and security implications, highlighting the impact on the airport’s operations.

The delay in providing a resolution to the runway lights issue at the Lagos airport drew criticism from the General Secretary of the Aviation Round Table (ART), Mr. Olumide Ohunayo. He stressed that the investigation was unnecessarily delayed, and precautions should be taken to prevent future incidents.

As the investigation continues, Ohunayo called for increased security measures, including reviewing CCTV camera footage and enhancing patrols to ensure extra security at the airside. He emphasized the significance of the Lagos airport, urging prompt action to address the issue and prevent additional operational costs for airlines and passengers.
