The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) is holding a high-level engagement with electricity regulators to strengthen cooperation and improve consumer protection in Nigeria’s power sector.
The meeting, taking place at the FCCPC headquarters, brings together officials from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and chairmen of various State Electricity Regulatory Commissions (SERCs).
The stakeholders are expected to discuss ways to improve coordination among regulators and address challenges affecting electricity consumers across the country.
Key areas of discussion include inter-agency collaboration, resolution of consumer complaints, public awareness, investigations and enforcement, market monitoring, and information sharing.
The engagement comes amid increased regulatory activities by states following the 2023 constitutional amendment that transferred more electricity regulatory powers to state governments.
Officials said the meeting is aimed at addressing growing consumer concerns, particularly issues surrounding estimated billing, inadequate metering, and electricity service delivery.
The forum will also help clarify the responsibilities of the FCCPC, NERC and state regulators to prevent overlapping duties and ensure a more effective regulatory system for electricity consumers.
