The Federal Government has launched the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System and urged Nigerians to find and begin using their unique digital postcodes.
The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, announced the launch, describing the new system as an important step towards making locations across Nigeria easier to identify and improving access to services and opportunities.

The system, operated by the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), assigns a unique 11-character digital postcode to every addressable building in the country.
Unlike traditional postcodes, the new system is designed to provide a more precise, GIS-enabled reference for identifying specific locations. Each code is structured around five levels: state, local government area, district, area and building.
According to Tijani, the digital postcode system could improve how businesses reach customers, particularly those outside their immediate neighbourhoods. It could also help families provide accurate locations during emergencies and assist government agencies in delivering essential services to communities.
“Every Nigerian deserves to be found. Every business deserves the chance to reach its customers. And every community deserves to be within reach of opportunity,” the minister said.

Tijani linked the initiative to the Federal Government’s broader digital economy and economic development agenda, saying reliable location information would provide part of the infrastructure required to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ambition of building a $1 trillion economy.
He said accurate digital addresses would help create the foundation needed for more Nigerians and businesses to participate in economic activities, trade and other opportunities.
HOW THE DIGITAL POSTCODE WORKS
Under the new system, every addressable building is assigned its own unique 11-character code. The code provides a standardised digital reference that can be used to identify a particular location.
The system is intended to make it easier to locate homes, businesses and other buildings while improving the accuracy of location information across the country.
The Federal Government is encouraging Nigerians to look up their individual postcodes and begin using them when providing their addresses.

Tijani urged citizens to search for their codes through the official Digital Postcode platform at postcode.gov.ng and share them with family members, friends and businesses.
POTENTIAL USES OF THE NEW SYSTEM
The digital postcode system is expected to support several areas of everyday life and public service delivery.
These include:
- Deliveries: Providing businesses and logistics operators with more precise location information.
- Emergency response: Helping individuals communicate their exact locations during emergencies.

- E-commerce: Making it easier for online businesses and customers to identify delivery destinations.
- Public services: Helping government agencies identify and reach communities more accurately.
- Business operations: Allowing businesses to serve customers beyond their immediate locations.
NIPOST had previously indicated that the digital postcode would provide a standard location reference that could support deliveries, emergency services, public service delivery and e-commerce.
The Federal Government is therefore positioning the new system as more than an alternative to traditional postal codes. It is intended to provide a nationwide digital addressing infrastructure that can connect physical locations with services, businesses and government programmes.
Nigerians can check their unique digital postcodes through the official platform at postcode.gov.ng.
