Femi Pedro Assumes Office as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Australia
Former Lagos State Deputy Governor, Femi Pedro, has officially begun his tenure as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Australia, with a commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, expanding trade opportunities, and promoting investment between both countries.
Pedro formally assumed office after presenting his Letters of Credence to Australia’s Governor-General, Sam Mostyn, a diplomatic process that officially confirms his appointment as Nigeria’s representative in the country. His responsibilities also extend to New Zealand, Fiji, Solomon Islands, and several other Pacific nations.
Speaking after the ceremony, Pedro described his appointment as an opportunity to deepen Nigeria’s engagement with one of the world’s most economically vibrant regions. He emphasized the importance of building stronger partnerships in key sectors such as mining, agriculture, education, technology, financial services, and innovation.
The new envoy noted that Nigeria and Australia share longstanding ties rooted in Commonwealth cooperation and mutual respect, adding that both nations stand to benefit from increased collaboration and economic exchanges.
Pedro stated that one of his priorities would be attracting investments, promoting educational partnerships, and encouraging cultural exchanges that strengthen people-to-people connections and economic development.
He also assured Nigerians living in Australia and across the Pacific region that the Nigerian mission would remain accessible and committed to addressing their concerns while supporting their contributions to national development.
According to him, his diplomatic mission will be guided by the Federal Government’s foreign policy objectives, which focus on development, diaspora engagement, democracy, and population-driven growth strategies.
Pedro encouraged members of the Nigerian diaspora to continue serving as positive ambassadors of the country, noting that their achievements and contributions remain important in advancing Nigeria’s interests on the global stage.
His appointment comes as the Federal Government intensifies efforts to promote economic diplomacy, attract foreign investments, increase exports, and strengthen strategic partnerships with countries across different regions of the world.
Observers believe the move could further enhance cooperation between Nigeria and Australia, particularly in areas such as critical minerals, education, trade, technology, and other sectors with strong growth potential.
