The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The announcement was made by the Federal Ministry of Interior, which congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad on the occasion.
The government said the holiday would allow citizens to celebrate the country’s independence and reflect on Nigeria’s progress, challenges and future.
The ministry urged Nigerians to use the occasion to promote peace, unity and national development.
It also called on citizens to continue supporting efforts aimed at strengthening the country’s economy and fostering peaceful coexistence among Nigerians.
Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960. The date has since been observed annually as the country’s Independence Day.
The Federal Government extended its best wishes to Nigerians and encouraged citizens to celebrate responsibly while remaining committed to the values of unity, patriotism and national development.
