The Federal Government has stepped up seismic monitoring following an earth tremor recorded in parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
The tremor, which occurred on Tuesday, was detected by the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA), prompting the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, to order increased surveillance and regular updates on seismic activities in and around the FCT.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Assistant on Media, Lara Owoeye-Wise, the minister directed the NGSA to provide hourly reports and strengthen monitoring efforts to ensure any further earth movement is quickly identified.
Alake, who is currently in Washington, D.C., for meetings with investors on Nigeria’s solid minerals sector, appealed to residents to remain calm, assuring them that there was no immediate threat.
“Residents should remain calm and continue with their normal activities without anxiety,” the statement said.
