Floods, Windstorms Worsen Power Crisis As Electricity Poles Collapse In Southwest Nigeria
Heavy rainfall across parts of Southwest Nigeria has reportedly damaged electricity infrastructure, leaving several communities in darkness as strong winds and flooding uprooted power poles and destroyed transmission facilities.
The destruction, linked to the intensifying rainy season, affected parts of Ogun, Oyo, Ondo and neighbouring areas, with residents lamenting prolonged outages and growing concerns over public safety. Energy operators have in previous years warned that severe downpours and windstorms remain major threats to fragile electricity infrastructure in parts of the region.
Experts say the repeated collapse of poles and power lines highlights deeper structural weaknesses within Nigeria’s power distribution network, particularly the continued dependence on ageing wooden poles vulnerable to erosion, flooding and wind pressure.
Analysts also warn that climate-related weather extremes are becoming more frequent, increasing pressure on already overstretched infrastructure and emergency response systems.
Residents in affected communities are calling for faster intervention, replacement of damaged facilities and stronger investment in modern, weather-resistant electricity infrastructure to reduce recurring blackouts during the rainy season.
