Former Lagos Attorney-General Alfred Kasunmu dies at 90
Professor Alfred Kasunmu, a former Attorney-General of Lagos State and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has died.
Kasunmu died peacefully in the early hours of Sunday, August 9, his family announced in a statement.
The family described the late legal scholar as a distinguished academic, mentor and patriarch whose life was defined by wisdom, integrity and service.
“Professor Kasunmu was not only a cherished patriarch of our family but also a distinguished scholar, mentor, and Senior Advocate of Nigeria whose legacy of wisdom, integrity, and service will continue to inspire generations,” the family said.
According to the family, Kasunmu touched many lives through his contributions to law, education and humanity.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later, while the family will receive visitors on Saturday, August 15, and Sunday, August 16, between 1pm and 7pm.
The family appealed for prayers as they mourned his death, adding that they found comfort in the remarkable life he lived.
Kasunmu was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1964 and joined the Faculty of Law at the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, that same year as one of its pioneer lecturers.
In 1971, he joined the University of Lagos as a senior lecturer and was promoted to professor of law in 1973. He also served as dean of the university’s Faculty of Law between 1973 and 1975.
He later served as Attorney-General of Lagos State from 1975 to 1978 before returning to private legal practice, where he founded Prof. A.B. Kasunmu Chambers.
Beyond his legal practice and public service, Kasunmu was a prolific legal scholar. He co-authored Nigerian Family Law with Jeswald W. Salacuse in 1966 and edited The Supreme Court of Nigeria, 1956–1970, published by Heinemann Educational Books.
His contributions to legal education, scholarship and public service earned him recognition as one of Nigeria’s notable legal figures.
