The abducted Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration of Abia State University, Prof. Godwin Emezue, has been freed after almost two weeks in captivity.

Emezue was kidnapped on January 27, 2024, at a filling station near Amachara, Umuahia South council area, while refilling his tank with his wife.
His release occurred on Tuesday night, following a ransom demand of N35 million by the kidnappers.

A source revealed that the abductors had earlier demanded N20 million, threatening to harm the professor if the amount was not paid by the end of the previous week. Currently, Professor Emezue is receiving medical attention due to the reported torture.

In a separate incident, the Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology in Wudil, Kano, has suspended a lecturer accused of administering corporal punishment to students.

A video showing the lecturer disciplining students inside a lecture hall went viral, prompting widespread controversy.

In response to a petition submitted by Kano-based lawyer Abba Hikima, the university’s Deputy Registrar, Sai’du Abdullahi Nayaya, announced the identification, query, and suspension of the lecturer.

The suspended staff member will undergo further disciplinary proceedings before the Senior Staff Disciplinary Committee.

The university management assured that it is committed to ensuring the welfare and safety of students, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy for any breaches.
