GOVERNMENT APPROVES SALARY INCREASE FOR CIVIL SERVANTS EFFECTIVE JULY

Public sector employees in Kenya are set to receive higher salaries from July following a government-approved review of wages and benefits aimed at improving the welfare of civil servants.

The announcement was made during Public Service Week celebrations, where government officials confirmed that the upcoming adjustments will cover salaries as well as key allowances, including housing and transportation benefits.

According to the government, the latest increase follows a previous salary review implemented earlier in the year, which was backdated to July 2025. Authorities said the new adjustment is intended to further enhance employee motivation and improve public service delivery across the country.

Government workers were encouraged to match the administration’s efforts by providing efficient and effective services to citizens, with officials emphasizing the goal of building one of the continent’s most productive public service systems.

In a related development, the Kenyan government has ordered all public institutions to adopt a unified payroll management system known as the Human Resource Information System (HRIS). The directive affects ministries, county governments, state agencies, and departments funded by the national government.

Officials warned that organizations that fail to migrate to the new payroll platform within the specified timeframe could face suspension from government salary processing.

The salary review comes shortly after President William Ruto approved a nationwide increase in the minimum wage. Under the adjustment, general workers are expected to receive a 12 percent pay rise, while employees in the agricultural sector will benefit from a 15 percent increase.

The government said the wage review is aimed at recognizing the contribution of workers to economic growth and national development, while also helping them cope with rising living expenses.

Although labor leaders had pushed for a larger wage increase, employer groups expressed concerns about the potential financial impact on businesses and the broader economy.
