The security situation in Kogi State has come under renewed concern after suspected gunmen attacked motorists along the Itobe-Ochadamu Expressway, killing the APC Chairman of Dekina Local Government Area, Hon. Ishaq Yunusa, and abducting another person.

The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday evening around Ojuwo Olijo in Ofu Local Government Area.

Confirming the attack on Friday, Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Afusat Saliu, said the assailants emerged from a nearby bush at about 5pm and opened fire on motorists.

According to the police, a blue Toyota Corolla with registration number GWA 636 CH was later found abandoned along the highway. Yunusa, who was driving the vehicle, was found dead, while another occupant was reportedly taken into the bush by the attackers.

Following the incident, the police and other security agencies launched operations around the area to locate the abducted victim and track down those responsible for the attack.

The remains of the deceased were evacuated to Grimard Hospital in Anyigba for an autopsy as investigators continued to gather information about the incident.

The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, has ordered sustained security operations along the affected route and directed officers to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

Authorities have also advised motorists and residents around the area to remain alert and report any suspicious movement or activity to security agencies.
