A series of violent attacks across parts of Nigeria has left several people dead and many others injured, heightening concerns over insecurity in multiple states.
In Kwara State, a fierce gun battle broke out in the early hours of Monday at Kemanji community in Kaiama Local Government Area, where armed attackers clashed with security personnel for about two hours. The assailants reportedly targeted a security post manned by soldiers, forest guards, and vigilantes.
During the confrontation, three soldiers and two vigilantes were killed, while several others sustained injuries. The attackers also made away with weapons, motorcycles, ammunition, and an army gun truck before fleeing the scene. Security forces have since launched a pursuit operation into nearby forests.
Residents confirmed that civilians were not directly attacked during the incident, as the gunmen focused on security operatives. Local leaders attributed the attack to armed groups believed to be operating from the Kainji forest axis.
In Plateau State, fresh violence claimed at least six lives, with eight others injured in separate attacks on communities in Barkin Ladi and Riyom local government areas. Gunmen reportedly stormed the affected areas at night, opening fire on residents and forcing many to flee their homes.
Similarly, in Benue State, suspected armed herders killed several people during an ആക്രമ on Tse Ameen community in Gwer West Local Government Area. Authorities confirmed multiple fatalities, while others remain missing following the incident.
In a related development, a group of abducted travellers, including candidates heading for a national examination, were recently freed after being held by kidnappers. One of the victims recounted being threatened and subjected to harsh treatment while in captivity, as the abductors demanded a large ransom.
Meanwhile, security authorities in Kwara confirmed the arrest of dozens of suspected illegal miners following the abduction of a traditional ruler in Ifelodun Local Government Area. The monarch was reportedly taken from his residence by armed men, who later demanded a substantial ransom for his release. Investigations are ongoing as security agencies intensify efforts to rescue him.
Amid the rising violence, the Chief of Defence Staff, Olufemi Oluyede, has directed troops to intensify operations against criminal groups, urging them to remain resolute in restoring peace across affected regions. He also assured personnel of continued support to strengthen ongoing security efforts nationwide.
