#JustIn: Major Road Shutdown: Sanwo-Olu Gears Up for Lagos City Marathon

The Lagos State government has officially announced the closure of several major roads in preparation for the upcoming Lagos City Marathon scheduled for Saturday. The State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, released a statement on Friday outlining the affected routes and the corresponding timeframe of closure, spanning from 5.00 am to 2.00 pm.

During this period, key routes, including Funsho Williams Avenue, Ikorodu Road, Gbagada to Third Mainland Bridge, Dolphin Road to Alfred Rewane Road, Falomo Roundabout to Bourdillon Road, Lekki Bridge to Freedom Way, and Akin-Adesola to Ahmadu Bello Way, will be inaccessible to motorists. The commissioner assured the public that alternative routes have been designated to ensure smooth traffic flow throughout the marathon.

To reach their destinations, drivers can opt for two alternatives. They can either take Apongbon Bridge towards Eko Bridge, passing through Costain Roundabout, Iponri, and Bode Thomas. Alternatively, they can choose to travel via Eko Bridge through Costain Roundabout and Apapa Road to reach Oyingbo/Jebba, subsequently accessing Herbert Macaulay for their desired destination.

Emphasizing the closure of the 3rd Mainland Bridge from midnight until the marathon concludes, Osiyemi highlighted that drivers can detour through Victoria Island to access Independence Bridge and CMS Bridge. This allows them to reach Apongbon towards Ijora-Olopa and Iddo, as well as Oyingbo to connect to Herbert Macaulay Road for onward travels.

Importantly, trips departing from Ikorodu Road and Funsho Williams Avenue towards Lagos Island remain unaffected by the diversion. To ensure smooth traffic flow and motorist safety, officers from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority will be stationed at diversion points.

The government strongly advises drivers without urgent matters on the marathon diversion routes to avoid these areas. Normal traffic conditions on the 3rd Mainland Bridge are expected to resume promptly following the marathon’s completion.
