Former Labour Party chieftain and lawyer Kenneth Okonkwo has admitted that he was misled when he previously defended former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi over claims concerning the state’s debt profile during Obi’s tenure.
Okonkwo made the admission while revisiting his earlier comments on the issue, acknowledging that the information available to him at the time was not accurate.
He had previously argued in defence of Obi amid discussions over Anambra State’s debt and the former governor’s financial record while in office.
However, after reviewing additional information, Okonkwo said he realised that some of the facts presented to him were misleading.
His latest comments have drawn attention because of his previous public support for Obi and his involvement in defending the former governor against criticisms of his administration.
The issue centres on the amount of debt accumulated by Anambra State during Obi’s tenure and how the figures should be interpreted in relation to the state’s finances at the time.
Okonkwo’s admission has consequently renewed discussions about the accuracy of claims made in political debates and the importance of verifying financial figures before publicly defending or criticising political figures.
