Labour asks FG to unveil new minimum wage May 1

As the 2024 Workers’ Day approaches, the organised labour has expressed its expectations, urging the Federal Government to announce a new minimum wage on May 1. The National Vice President of the Trade Union Congress, Tommy Etim, described Workers’ Day as a significant event for Nigerian workers, emphasizing the importance of addressing their welfare and considering their needs.

Etim mentioned that the purchasing power in the country is currently weak due to some government policies that have limited the financial capacity of workers and citizens. He expressed hope that the new minimum wage would be announced on Workers’ Day and that incentives would be provided to alleviate the challenges faced by workers.

Organised labour, comprising the Nigerian Labour Congress and TUC, has demanded N615,000 as the new minimum wage for workers in Nigeria. This figure was reached after consultations by the NLC and TUC, which have been communicated to the government. However, an increase in the minimum wage might be considered following the recent hike in electricity tariffs.

In addition to the new minimum wage, the organised labour expects the government to launch the CNG buses it promised over a year ago. This initiative is aimed at improving public transportation and reducing the cost of living for Nigerian workers.
