Lagos State has installed electric vehicle (EV) charging points at its newly commissioned 7,000-square-metre fresh food hub in Pen Cinema, Agege, as part of efforts to modernise the facility and improve food distribution across the state.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the development on Wednesday after commissioning the Lagos Fresh Food Hub in Agege.
The facility is designed to accommodate hundreds of traders and includes dry and cold storage facilities, a dedicated seafood section, parking spaces and EV charging points.
According to the governor, the hub is intended to make the movement of food from farmers and suppliers to communities across Lagos faster and more organised.
Sanwo-Olu explained that the facility brings together key players in the food supply chain, including farmers, traders, retailers, institutional buyers and consumers.
He said the Agege hub is part of Lagos State’s wider food distribution network, which is designed to improve food security and bring food closer to residents.
The facility receives supplies from the Central Food Security and Logistics Hub at Ketu-Ereyun, while other mid-level hubs, including the Fresh Food Hub in Mushin, form part of the state’s broader distribution system.
The Mushin Fresh Food Agro-Hub was commissioned in December 2023 to support organised food trading, storage and distribution.
The state government has said these hubs are aimed at shortening supply chains, reducing logistical challenges and improving access to fresh produce for consumers.
In July 2025, Heirs Holdings Chairman Tony Elumelu announced a N25 billion commitment to support the Produce for Lagos Programme, alongside the N500 billion Offtake Guarantee Fund. The initiative is intended to improve market access for farmers by linking agricultural production with organised demand in Lagos.
The inclusion of EV charging infrastructure at the Agege facility also reflects the growing adoption of electric vehicles in Lagos.
Philip Ogunleye, Founder and CEO of Vine Mobility & Technologies, previously told Nairametrics that EV charging infrastructure is most effective when located in places people already visit, such as shopping centres, workplaces, hotels, transport hubs and fleet depots.
He identified Lagos as Nigeria’s leading market for EV development, citing the growing number of electric vehicles, increasing private investment and rising interest from businesses in installing charging facilities.
With the addition of EV charging points, the Agege food hub combines food distribution infrastructure with emerging electric mobility services, providing charging access to traders, suppliers, buyers and other visitors to the facility.
