LAGOS CRACKS DOWN ON ILLEGAL STREET TRADING, GIVES HAWKERS 72-HOUR EVICTION DEADLINE

The Lagos State Government has issued a 72-hour ultimatum directing street traders and illegal occupants operating along the Alaba Rago corridor of the Mile 2–Badagry Expressway to vacate the area ahead of a planned enforcement exercise.

The Lagos State Taskforce said the operation, to be carried out in collaboration with other enforcement agencies, is aimed at restoring environmental order by removing illegal trading activities on highways, walkways, road medians, and setbacks in line with the state’s environmental laws.

Chairman of the Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, explained that the exercise forms part of ongoing efforts to address environmental degradation, safety concerns, and other illegal activities that have become widespread along the corridor. He noted that the operation would target makeshift shops, illegal structures, mini brothels, used plastic depots, indiscriminate waste disposal, and other environmental violations.

Akerele urged affected traders and occupants to voluntarily relocate before the expiration of the 72-hour notice, warning that anyone who fails to comply will face enforcement measures, including the confiscation of goods and other legal sanctions.

He added that the Alaba Rago corridor, a major gateway into Lagos through the ECOWAS Road, must be protected from activities that undermine the state’s vision of a clean, orderly, and modern megacity. According to him, the government adopted a stakeholder engagement approach by sensitising those affected before commencing enforcement.
