Among the casualties were Dr. Cairo Ojougboh, a prominent member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the Deputy Bursar of Kwara State University, Ayuba Abdullahi, a corps member in Adamawa State identified as Samuel, Anambra-born businessman Osondu Nwoye, and Mikail Osundiji, a 43-year-old sales representative from Abeokuta.
According to Dr. Ramon Moronkola, a Consultant Cardiologist at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), sudden deaths during football matches can be attributed to heart attacks or strokes, exacerbated by underlying cardiovascular issues.
To prevent such occurrences, Moronkola recommends regular health checks for everyone and emphasizes the need for enhanced emergency response and preparedness in Nigeria.
Dr. Chira Obiora, a consultant family physician at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, advises individuals to be aware of their health challenges before watching football, as excitement can release adrenaline and trigger cardiovascular problems.
Former Osun State Commissioner for Works, Remi Omowaiye, echoes this caution, sharing his own experience of anxiety during the semi-final.
He urges Nigerians managing hypertension to refrain from watching the final live, emphasizing the emotional and physical stress it may induce.
Additionally, Omowaiye calls on the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to honor the memory of fans who lost their lives during the semi-final, emphasizing the importance of recognizing and paying tribute to those who tragically passed away.
