The Nigerian Navy has intensified its crackdown on illegal resource exploitation with the interception of two wooden boats carrying suspected illegally mined black sand and the arrest of 13 suspects in Bayelsa State.
According to Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the operation was carried out by personnel of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Formoso following credible intelligence on suspected illegal mining activities in coastal communities within Brass Local Government Area.
Acting on the intelligence, naval operatives intercepted the boats at Lekeson and Liama communities, where they discovered large quantities of suspected illegally extracted black sand on board.
A total of 13 individuals were arrested in connection with the operation, the Navy confirmed.
Folorunsho said the operation underscores the Navy’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s maritime environment and curbing illegal exploitation of natural resources that threaten economic stability and environmental sustainability.
He added that the Navy remains committed to sustained operations against illegal mining and other maritime crimes while ensuring safety and security across the nation’s waterways.
In line with existing procedures, the intercepted boats, the recovered materials, and the suspects were handed over to the Divisional Police Officer of Nembe Division for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Navy further reiterated its collaboration with relevant security agencies and stakeholders to safeguard Nigeria’s maritime assets and ensure that waterways remain secure for lawful economic activities.
The operation forms part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining, maritime crime, and environmental degradation in coastal regions of the country.
