NIGERIA MUST NOT BECOME AFRICA’S METHAMPHETAMINE FACTORY: FOREIGN DRUG CARTELS, LOCAL COLLABORATORS AND THE GROWING THREAT TO NATIONAL SECURITY

The recent dismantling of another industrial-scale methamphetamine laboratory hidden deep inside a forest in Oyo State has exposed a disturbing reality: Nigeria is no longer viewed merely as a transit route for illicit drugs. It is increasingly being targeted as a production base by sophisticated transnational criminal syndicates.

Only weeks earlier, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) uncovered what it described as one of the largest clandestine methamphetamine laboratories in Africa in the forests of Ijebu East, Ogun State. That operation led to the arrest of Nigerian suspects alongside three Mexican nationals allegedly brought into the country specifically for their expertise in manufacturing methamphetamine on an industrial scale. Authorities seized approximately 2.4 tonnes of chemicals and finished products valued at about ₦480 billion.

The latest raid in Oyo State tells an equally troubling story. NDLEA operatives dismantled another fortified meth laboratory operating deep inside Tapa Village, Ibarapa North Local Government Area, arresting a 56-year-old Mexican methamphetamine specialist and four Nigerian collaborators allegedly providing logistics and local operational support. The laboratory contained industrial reactors, distillation equipment, precursor chemicals and materials capable of producing enormous quantities of methamphetamine.

These discoveries raise an uncomfortable question.

How did foreign criminal experts enter Nigeria, establish sophisticated drug laboratories in remote forests and recruit local collaborators without attracting earlier attention?

This is no longer simply a narcotics problem. It is a national security challenge.

Methamphetamine is among the world’s most destructive synthetic drugs. It fuels organised crime, violent behaviour, addiction, mental illness and public health crises. Unlike plant-based narcotics, meth can be manufactured year-round using imported precursor chemicals and technical expertise, making clandestine laboratories particularly attractive to international cartels. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime has warned that West Africa is becoming increasingly vulnerable to synthetic drug production because of porous borders, weak regulation and expanding criminal networks.

Perhaps even more disturbing than the involvement of foreign “meth cooks” is the participation of Nigerians themselves.

Foreign drug cartels cannot establish factories inside Nigeria without local support. Someone provides land. Someone arranges accommodation. Someone procures chemicals. Someone transports equipment. Someone protects the operation. Organised crime flourishes only when domestic collaborators become willing partners.

This is why the recent operations deserve exceptional commendation. The intelligence-driven work of the NDLEA demonstrates that Nigerian security agencies possess the capability to identify, infiltrate and dismantle sophisticated transnational criminal organisations operating within the country’s borders. The professionalism displayed in both the Ogun and Oyo operations sends a strong message that Nigeria will not surrender its territory to international drug syndicates.

The Federal Government should now build on these successes by tightening border security, strengthening immigration screening, monitoring precursor chemical imports, improving inter-agency intelligence sharing and enhancing surveillance of forests and other remote locations increasingly exploited by organised criminal groups.

Lessons can also be drawn from countries such as Mexico, Colombia and South Africa, where specialised intelligence units, financial investigations and international cooperation have become essential tools in dismantling drug cartels rather than merely arresting individual traffickers. Nigeria must deepen collaboration with international law enforcement agencies to identify financiers, chemical suppliers and overseas criminal networks directing these operations.

The fight against methamphetamine is ultimately a fight for Nigeria’s future.

If criminal syndicates succeed in transforming Nigeria into a regional manufacturing hub for synthetic drugs, the consequences will extend far beyond law enforcement. Public health, national security, youth development and the country’s international reputation would all be placed at serious risk.

The forests of Ogun and Oyo must never become the laboratories of death for Africa.

Nigeria has won important battles.

Now it must ensure it wins the war.

The National Patriots commends the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies for their intelligence-led operations that continue to dismantle sophisticated criminal networks. The renewed professionalism of the Police has significantly strengthened its standing among Africa’s leading law enforcement institutions. Foreign nationals who enter Nigeria to establish drug laboratories and manufacture dangerous narcotics should face the maximum penalties prescribed by law, while their Nigerian collaborators must receive equally severe punishment upon conviction. We must dismantle the entire supply chain—from financiers and facilitators to manufacturers and distributors. Nigerians, especially our youth, must reject drugs and those who profit from them. Drug trafficking is not only a crime; it is an attack on the nation’s future, destroying lives, families and the next generation of leaders.
