Nigeria, UK Move Against Aviation Security Threats, Reckless Use of Drones

National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), Office of the National Security Adviser, is brainstorming with the United Kingdom government to address security threats to domestic and international aviation and curb reckless use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).

A three-day session, tagged ‘Joint Threats and Counter Drones Workshop’ will discuss modalities for countering threat to aviation by drones.

The workshop was organised under the Nigeria-United Kingdom Security and Defence Partnership Dialogue.

National Coordinator, NCTC, Rear Admiral Yaminu Musa (rtd), noted: “It is a fact that no single agency or country can achieve meaningful success in the fight against terrorism alone; hence, we must all collaboratively work towards progress, since the fight against terrorism stresses the need for inter-agency collaboration and cross-border relationships.

Nigerians React: It is about time they enact a law to curb the menace of those drones like being done in developed countries. Anyone can use drones of any type in Nigeria, anywhere without regulations. This poses a real danger. Once there is a good company handling aviation security in Nigeria, they will ban drones from at least a specific aerial distance from the airside. So, these are the sort of actions to enforce compliance that such an aviation security third party company would undertake. Drones have caused accidents in other countries. We should be proactive with our policy.
