A Nigerian Army officer, Col. Timothy Ajato, has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first international fellow to receive the prestigious Frank Kelly Writing Award at the United States Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

The award, regarded as the institution’s highest academic writing honour, was presented following his graduation with distinction from the 2026 Academic Year programme. He was among the top performers in a cohort of 365 senior military officers and strategic leaders drawn from the United States and allied nations.

This marks the first time a foreign student has been honoured with the Frank Kelly Writing Award since the establishment of the War College. The recognition also grants him lifetime membership of the United States Army War College Foundation along with other distinguished privileges.
Beyond the award, Col. Ajato also earned a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies, reflecting his strong academic and strategic expertise. The institution further noted that he developed model responses approved for use in future oral comprehensive examinations, which will serve as reference materials for upcoming student cohorts.

The United States Army War College is widely regarded as a leading global institution for training senior military and civilian leaders in strategic-level leadership and national security planning.
The Nigerian Army described the achievement as evidence of the increasing global recognition of its officers and a reflection of ongoing efforts to build highly skilled leaders capable of addressing modern security challenges.

It added that the accomplishment aligns with the vision of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, aimed at strengthening professionalism, adaptability, and operational readiness within the armed forces.
The Army also reaffirmed its commitment to continuous investment in professional military education to enhance both national and international security cooperation.
