According to reports, Akinyemi suffered a sudden cardiac arrest less than 20 hours after her arrival and was rushed to Luton and Dunstable Hospital. She remained on life support for three days before being declared clinically dead on February 14, 2026.

A fundraising campaign has been launched on JustGiving to raise £20,000 to cover the repatriation of her remains to Nigeria, medical bills, and funeral expenses. As of Wednesday, £2,087 had been raised from 97 donors. The appeal described her as a beloved mother, sister, and friend, urging support to bring her home for burial.

Akinyemi, reportedly a mother of four, had arrived in the UK on February 11 for her son’s graduation scheduled for February 18. Her sudden death has sparked calls on social media for travellers, especially the elderly, to take precautionary health measures when travelling abroad, including staying hydrated, avoiding excessive alcohol and caffeine, and using compression socks to maintain circulation.

Some users also highlighted the need for better collaboration between health authorities and the aviation sector to manage travel-related medical emergencies, emphasizing that such deaths could potentially be prevented with proper protocols.
