NIGERIANS JOIN GLOBAL CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY IN EASTER CELEBRATIONS

Clergy urged Nigerians to embrace peace, unity, and compassion, while churches held sunrise services to mark the occasion.

In Niger State, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) called on the Federal and State Governments to address hardship and insecurity in the region. State Chairman Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, in a message titled “Be Hopeful, Be Resilient, Be Compassionate,” urged Christians to support vulnerable groups and live out the values of Easter. He also encouraged residents to remain prayerful and back the administration of Umaru Bago, while stressing the importance of active civic participation ahead of the 2027 elections.

Meanwhile, the Middle East war cast a shadow over Easter celebrations for Christians worldwide. Pope Leo XIV, marking his first Easter as pontiff, called for peace and unity during a vigil, highlighting the divisions caused by war and injustice. In Jerusalem, services at the Holy Sepulchre were held behind closed doors due to Israeli security restrictions, while Christians in Lebanon’s southern regions faced bombardment and isolation amid the conflict between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement.

Residents and church leaders described the situation as tragic, emphasizing the fear and uncertainty brought on by ongoing violence. Yet, despite the challenges, faithful remained committed to celebrating Easter, drawing hope and strength from their faith.
